PURPOSE:To improve the casting surface of a refined metal ingot by insulating a casting mold from the bottom electrodes of an electroslag remelting furnace and connecting the mold to the furnace bottom electrodes by impedance variable cables, thereby adjusting the quantity of the electric current flowing from a consumable electrode to the casting mold and uniformizing the temp. distribution of molten slag. CONSTITUTION:The metal 1 to be refined as the consumable electrode of an electroslag remelting method is heated by the Joule heat of the molten slag 6 when the furnace bottom electrodes are energized by a power supply 5 in the molten slag 6. The consumable electrode 1 melted in such a manner is passed in the form of the liquid drops through the molten slag 6 and is refined by the slag 6, by which an ingot 8 having a high grade is produced. The water cooled casting mold 2 is insulated by insulators 4 from the furnace bottom electrodes and the mold 2 is connected by the cables 10 to the furnace bottom electrodes, by which the shunt (b) is passed from the electrode 1 to the mold 2. The impedance of the cables 10 can be varied by changing the length, number, disposition, etc., of the cables and, therefore, the quantity of the shunt (b) can be regulated. The distributions of the main current (a) and the shunt (b) in the molten slag 6 are thereby controlled, by which the molten slag 6 is uniformly heated and the casting surface of the ingot 8 is improved.
