PURPOSE:To produce the title copolymer having a desired MW in good reproducibility, by copolymerizing p-vinylphenol with a styrene monomer in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator in a system containing a specified phenol and water. CONSTITUTION:p-Vinylphenol (A) is copolymerized with a styrene monomer (B) at a ratio of 1:9-9:1 and 70-150 deg.C for 10min-5hr in the presence of 0.1-10wt%, based on the total reaction mixture, radical initiator (e.g., azobisisobutyronitrile) in a system containing 1-5,000wt%, based on the total of component A and component B, unsaturated side chain-free phenol (e.g., phenol) to obtain a p-vinylphenol/styrene monomer copolymer having a linear structure and a weight-average MW of 1,500-30,000.
