PURPOSE:To absorb a rotary flow component in the back flow of a propeller and improve propulsion efficiency by providing a propeller pitch controller which can control a pitch varying mechanism by means of a signal from the detector of a rotation component in the back flow of said propeller. CONSTITUTION:When there is a rotation component in the back flow of a propeller at the time of the sailing of a ship, a fin 32 is rotated and the rotating direction and speed are detected by a tachometer 33. A propeller pitch controller 34 which received the detected signal outputs a control signal to a hydraulic pump 35, which, in turn, feeds pressure oil selectively into the oil chambers 23, 24 of a cylinder 36. Thereby, as a piston 38 is moved in right and left directions causing a disk member 50 to move right and left directions while keeping the engaged condition between a groove 51 and a pin 48 in a propeller boss 45, propeller blades 49 are rotated around a rotary shaft 47, to change the propeller pitch of a propeller 3. Since the propeller pitch is thus changed, the rotating energy of a flow which is dispersed into the back flow of the propeller is eliminated, improving the propulsion efficiency of a propeller.
