PROCESS FOR RECOVERING METAL VALUES FROM FERRITE WASTES

Process for recovering metal values from a zinc ferrite-containing waste by mixing the ferrite (2) with a solution containing sulfuric acid and a source of ammonium ions to form a sulfuric acid leach mixture (4), heating the leach mixture at a temperature above 50 DEG C and below the decomposition temperature of ammonium jarosite to form solid ammonium jarosite (8) and solubilized zinc sulfate, separating the phases, recovering zinc from the leachate (6) treating the solid with a solution of calcium chloride (10) at a temperature no greater than the boiling point of the solution to form a liquid leachate (14) and a solid residue (12) followed by separation of the leachate from the residue and recovery of metal values from the liquid phase.
