PURPOSE:To improve operability of a mode controller by setting the process mode in response to each user when a power supply is applied. CONSTITUTION:When the break of a power supply is detected, the copy modes (number of copy sheets, density, magnification, etc.) are stored in a RAM of a CPU 301. Then it is decided whether a prescribed standard mode should be set or not in an application mode of the power supply according to the state of the key set on a key matrix after reapplication of the power supply is detected. Then a standard mode is set as long as the preference is given to the standard mode. Otherwise the copy mode data is read out of the RAM of the CPU 301 so that the mode stored at the time of break of the power supply is set. Thus it is possible to comply with each request of a user to an initial mode (set an application time of the power supply) by setting the mode set at the time of break of the power supply when the power supply is applied.
