PURPOSE:To improve operability with a document preparing/editing device when the print character strings are prepared for print in a routine form, by discriminating the characters to be printed from those not to be printed when character strings are stored and having control so that a cursor does not indicate those characters not to be printed in an editing mode. CONSTITUTION:An editing mode storing part 7 serves as a memory (RAM) which stores the conditions under which it is decided whether or not the print characters should be discriminated from the non-print characters in the editing mode. If said discrimination is required, an item mode is set and stored as the editing mode. A character deciding part 8 decides whether a character indicated by a cursor is equal to a print character or a non-print one. Based on this deciding result, a cursor control part 9 controls the shift of the cursor so that the cursor does not indicate the characters of a non-print character string in the editing mode. Thus the preparing efficiency of print character strings is extremely improved with a document preparing/editing device having a routine form print function.
