PURPOSE:To optimize exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in all the operation region including the time of transient operation of an engine, by obtaining a difference between the actual injection timing and the target injection timing of a fuel injection pump and correcting an EGR amount in accordance with the obtained difference. CONSTITUTION:When an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) amount of a Diesel engine 10 is controlled, a difference between the actual injection timing of a fuel injection pump 4 and its target injection timing is obtained, and the EGR amount is corrected in accordance with the obtained difference. Accordingly, even if the actual injection timing provides delay or advance timing from the target injection timing by generating the response delay of a timer when the engine is in transient operation, the EGR amount suitable for the actual injection timing can be obtained. Accordingly, in all the operation regions including when the engine is in transient operation, the EGR amount, in its turn, the EGR rate can be most suitably controlled. Consequently, the engine enables its deterioration to be prevented and acceleration characteristic to be improved with no worsening of a quality of emission in exhaust gas.
