The device is preferably attached as disposable article in the form of a card to the items to be washed and disinfected, e.g. surgical clothing. The protective covering preferably consists of a plastic material which resists the mechanical stress in washing machines and can be welded. The protective covering of the device prevents mechanical damage to the biological indicator which is enveloped by a material which is resistant to temperature, detergents and disinfectants but permeable to water although impermeable to bacteria and is located on a support material. The orifices in the protective covering ensure that there is uniform and thorough rinsing of the biological indicator which is subject to the same thermal and chemical conditions during the washing and disinfecting process as the item to be washed. After the washing and disinfection process is complete, the device is removed from the washed item. The biological indicator can be removed from the device by cutting open and/or turning up the device and by allowing the support to fall out of the protective covering and the envelope without touching for checking in a nutrient solution. ...
