Acicular coke prodn. for graphite electrodes

The process for making raw material for mfr. of graphite electrodes used in the steel industry, consists of (a) heating green acicular coke at 468-649 deg.C for 10 mins. to 24 hours in an inclined plane furnace; and (b) calcining the coke obtained at above 1093 deg.C.. Between the two stages the coke must not cool by more than 260 deg.C. Before (a) the coke may be dried to below 5% moisture content. The friability of the coke is reduced from above 120 to below 70 on the Hardgrove Milling Index after (a), and the amt. of powder produced during calcination is reduced.
