PURPOSE:To record a sound area on a magnetic disk without cutting in the middle part, to expand it with an expansion ratio corresponding to compressibility at time of reproduction, and to eliminate change in a tone, by varying the compressibility corresponding to the length of a sound are signal. CONSTITUTION:A sound analog signal inputted to an A/D converter 7 in a time base compression device 100 in a recording system is converted to a digital signal, and the signal is stored in a RAM 101. An address is supplied to the RAM 101 from an address counter 10, and a read out digital signal is converted to an analog signal at a D/A converter 9, and is recorded on a video floppy 19. A clock with a constant level of frequency for RAM writing is supplied to the counter 10 from a clock generator 11, and the completion of the analog signal in the sound area is detected by a signal completion detector 102. At this time, the compressibility coinciding with the recording time of the floppy 19 is calculated from a write address at an arithmetic unit 103. A clock generator 104 capable of varying the frequency controls the counter 10 based on the compressibility, and supplies the clock to every part.
