The present invention concerns to a novel process for a controlled chemical depolimerization of naturally occurring linear polysaccharides, more specifically glycosaminoglycans. The invention also embraces the depolimerized heparins obtained according to the new process and the pharmaceutical compositions containing such depolimerized heparins. The polysaccharides are subjected in accordance with the invention to the action of atomic oxygen which, preferably, is obtained from hypochlorous acid.
