The invention relates to a method and apparatuses for dressing grinding wheels to approximate involute profiles and to involute-like profiles. Such grinding wheels are required for the form-grinding of internal and external gears and ring gears, and also for the form-grinding of broaching tools with which such gears are to be produced. It uses the fact that an involute profile can be approximated by an arc of an ellipse from the region between major vertex and minor vertex. Apparatuses with which a dressing diamond is guided on a corresponding arc of an ellipse, in axial section, over the surface to be dressed are used as dressing apparatus. To this end, a dressing tool which acts on an arc of a circle is guided perpendicularly over the axial section. In this case, the vertical through the radius of curvature of the arc of a circle is set at such an inclination with respect to the axial-section plane and the rotational plane of the grinding wheel that the projection of the arc of a circle on to the axial-section plane in the region to be dressed is the desired arc of an ellipse. Rotating dressing diamonds and dressing rolls and also fixed dressing edges in the shape of an arc of a circle are used in this embodiment as dressing tool.
