In extensive digital transmission systems, monitoring of the different functions is essential in order to ensure reliable operation. These transmission system functions are often monitored by means of special monitoring circuits, the alarm signals of the monitoring circuits usually being evaluated by a control circuit in such a way that a display device with a number of light sources is activated, the display device having a smaller number of light sources than the number of different alarm signals. For clear display of the cause of the fault, changeover to a coded fault display by the light sources is effected by the control circuit. The number of different alarm signals which can be displayed can be increased in simple fashion in that the control circuit performs the activation and de-activation of the light sources with a flashing frequency.
