PURPOSE:To well reproduce a video signal even when defective head butting is generat ed on one end of a track, by dividing and recording the video signal of one field into plural segments, providing an ditional period between the segments, and inserting and recording the signals before and behind. CONSTITUTION:Head switching at time of reproduction is performed at a position shown in arrow head AR, and a head is positioned at the end of a magnetic tape, and that of a track. Deterioration in a regenerative signal is easy to happen due to the defective head butting. Therefore, the signals at the M-th and the (M+1)-th lines area reproduced twice. In other words, they are reproduced at the upper end and the lower end of the track by different head respectively. Therefore, when the deterioration in a regenerative image such as the generation of drop-out at the time of reproducing the final M-th line of a first segment, or no detection of a horizontal synchronizing signal, etc. is predicted by the output of a drop-out detection circuit 7 or a synchronizing signal processing circuit 8, the regenerative signal of the final M-th line in the additional period T0 is used. Similarly, when the deterioration in the regenerative signal of a first (M+1)-th line of a second segment is predicted, the regenerative signal of a first M-th line in the additional period T0 written in a memory 12 is used.
