PURPOSE:To improve dispersibility of magnetic particles and to improve the durability and magnetic characteristics of a magnetic layer by using a magnetic coating compd. prepd. by incorporating a titanium coupling agent and binder resin having a sulfonic acid group into said compd. and dispersing these materials by a specific dispersion method. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic coating compd. contg. the titanium coupling agent and the binder resin having the sulfonic acid group is dispersed by using a 1st dispersion medium, for example, zirconia ceramic beads, etc., having about 2-3mm grain size. Said compd. is then dispersed by using a 2nd dispersion medium having the smaller sp. gr. and the smaller grain sizes to form the magnetic coating compd. The coating compd. formed in such a manner is coated on a nonmagnetic base to form the magnetic layer. The breakdown of the primary particles of the magnetic powder is minimized and the dispersion of the residual microflocculation is executed by adopting such method for dispersing the magnetic powder. The uniform coating compd. having the excellent dispersibility is thus efficiently obtd. The magnetic layer is formed by using such coating compd., by which the magnetic recording medium having the good durability and magnetic characteristics is obtd. Such recording medium is adequately used for production of magnetic tapes, etc.
