In a, for example, four-wheel vehicle with pneumatic or hydropneumatic spring elements, the gas cushions of the spring elements are controlled with the aid of bearing elements and by means of a compressor so that when cornering and when braking or accelerating, gas is transferred from the gas cushions of extended spring elements into the gas cushions of compressed spring elements until the level position of individual spring elements is re-established. In this way, the vehicle is stabilised in the case of dynamic ride movements and the body remains parallel to the road at all times, there being no need for means of static level control, or these being disabled. Non-return valves upstream of the inlet chamber and downstream of the outlet chamber of the compressor prevent any exchange of gas between the gas cushions of simultaneously extended and compressed spring elements.
