PURPOSE:To obtain the correct character string data as desired by a plotter by deciding whether or not the divided character strings should be integrated (connected) after understanding the meaning of segments against the character strings divided individually by such segments as a center line drawn on a draw ing, etc., and the dimensional lines, etc. CONSTITUTION:A segment identifying means 3 supplies the segment information sorted by an element sorting means 1 and at the same time identifies segments based on the given defining information. Then the means 3 identifies such a segment that crosses two character strings having same directions. A segments type deciding means 4 decides the kind of the attribute of the type of the segment crossing a character string, e.g., a center line or an auxiliary dimensional line from the character string information and the segment information. If the segment means a center line, for example, the divided two character strings are connected together by a character connecting means 5 in accordance with the attribute of each segment.
