<p>An intraocular lens for implantation in a human eye has an optic (40) of hydrophilic material, the optic being in a contracted condition when dry, capable of expanding in response to uptake of liquid from its environment, the optic is formed to such a size and shape in its dry contracted condition that it will have the desired optical characteristics when in its final expanded condition. The lens also has position-fixation means (31, 32) whereby the lens may be seated in the eye, the position-fixation means being constructed so as to retain their shape and resiliency characteristics substantially independently of the liquid environment within the eye. The optic is secured to the position-fixation means by connecting means that position the optic generally centrally with respect to the optical axis of the eye, when said hydrophilic optic means is in said expanded condition thereof, and that permit seating of the position-fixation means within the eye irrespective of the size of the optic between the contracted and expanded conditions thereof.</p> |
