Winding apparatus for forming a package on a winding core, having the following features: a) the winding apparatus has at least one feed roller; b) the feed roller and at least one middle and one exit supporting roller surround a closed winding space; c) there is provided an entry supporting device which is movable between an open position and a supporting position; d) the exit supporting roller is mounted movably; e) a severing device is provided; f) the entry supporting device is designed as an entry supporting roller (5) which, in the supporting position (C) (19), forms together with the feed and middle supporting roller or rollers (2, 3, 6) a closed first winding-space portion (26); g) feed, middle and exit supporting roller or rollers (2, 3, 6, 7) are so dimensioned and after the formation of the first winding-space portion (26), assume such a position that a second winding-space portion (27) formed by the first is formed adjacent to the latter; h) the distance between the middle supporting roller or rollers (6) and the feed roller or rollers (2, 3) can be increased in such a way that the centre axis of the package (28, 30) exceeds the line of axial distance of the feed and middle supporting roller or rollers (3, 6) after a first winding portion, and the package (28, 30) passes into the second winding-space portion (27); i) the middle supporting and/or feed roller or rollers (2, 3, 6) can thereafter be moved back. <IMAGE>
