PURPOSE:To store a video signal to a correct address in a field memory and to attain satisfactory variable speed reproduction by providing a vertical synchronizing signal (V synchronization) detecting circuit and discriminating a tracking condition from the detecting condition of the V synchronization. CONSTITUTION:In the VTR of a 2-channel 3-segment recording system, a reproducing signal from rotary heads 2a, 2b and 3a, 3b of respective channels is outputted through FM demodulating circuits 5a and 5b to V synchronization detecting circuits 10a and 10b. Next, the circuits 10a and 10b detect that the output from envelope detecting circuits 8a and 8b is a prescribed level or above, and detects the V synchronization from the output of the circuits 5a and 5b. When the V synchronization is detected by either of channels, the tracking condition at that time is found, and even when both channels are not detected, the tracking condition can be determined from the previous condition. Thus, a video signal is stored into a correct address in a field memory 7 through a memory control circuit 11 and a satisfactory variable speed reproduction can be executed.
