A ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal composition having a tilt angle of 30 DEG to 60 DEG and superior alignment property is provided, which composition is obtained by mixing at least one chiral or achiral smectic C compound having smectic A phase of temperature range within 40 DEG C with at least one chiral smectic C compound having no smectic A phase, and adjusting the temperature range of smectic A phase of the resulting composition so as to fall within 30 DEG C.
