PURPOSE:To obtain a luminous tube for a metal vapor discharge lamp having extremely little impure gas by introducing mercury into a mercury reservoir after refining the additive, thence introducing filler gas with impure gas removed while exhausting to evaporate mercury and temporarily sealing tip of the exhaust pipe; thereafter introducing the additive and mercury into the luminous tube carrying out permanent sealing thereof. CONSTITUTION:A luminous tube 1 is mounted to an exhaust device via a exhaust pipe 4, the inside of the luminous tube is heated to an approximately 1100 deg.C, a degassing treatment is conducted, then an additive 14 is introduced into the inside of the luminous tube 1 from the exhaust device via a exhaust pipe 4. Next the luminous tube is heated at approximately 600 deg.C while exhausting, and the degassing treatment of the additive is made with the additive 14 vaporized and made to cohere to a cooling part 15. Then mercury 13 is introduced into the luminous tube 1 via the exhaust pipe 4 the tip of the exhaust pipe 4 is sealed after a filler gas is introduced with an exhaust valve 16 and a gas feed valve 17 changed, lastly the joint part of the exhaust pipe 4 to the luminous tube 1 is sealed after the additive in the cooling part 15 is sent to the inside of the luminous tube 1 by heating. In such a way, a metal vapor discharge lamp having the luminous tube with an extremely small quantity of an impure gas is obtained.
