PURPOSE:To identify the classification of address data at the time of reproduction even when the address data is mixedly recorded by varying the duty cycle of a control pulse according to the address data and recording it in different formats. CONSTITUTION:A microcomputer 1 transmits pulses, of which timings are different and which have one frame cycle, respectively from an output CTL 1 and an output CTL 2 based on an input recording control pulse. By these output, a head 2 records each control pulse on a magnetic tape. In such a case, first address data being an auto-address mark mode is recorded as the duty cycle variation of a control pulse in a signal format which is composed of headers 11a-11d and address data 12a-12c in time series. The second address data being a manual mode is recorded in the same way in a signal format which is composed of an index code 14 and an address code 15.
