PURPOSE:To more accurately decide an image area by executing an arithmetic operation for such characters of a filter as decided in association with respective frequency characteristics of images, and extracting the feature of an attended picture element after considering the overall situation. CONSTITUTION:A filter arithmetic means 1 executes the filter arithmetic operation for a target image information at such a filter characteristic that emphasizes a specific part of the frequency characteristic of an image. This filter arithmetic operation is applied to the attended picture element Co and peripheral picture elements E(c); the operation also is similarly executed by sequentially shifting the attended picture element Co in relation to the target image in formation. Since the above-mentioned filter characteristic is associated with the frequency characteristic of one of a binary image, a dot image, a variable density image, the result of the operation by the filter arithmetic means 1 is made correspondent to the attended picture element Co, and based on this result, an image discrimination means 2 discriminate whether or not the attended picture element Co belongs to either one of a binary image, a dot image, and a variable density image that relates to the above-said filter characteristic. |
