The assessment method involves comparing the value of each characteristic for a currently received pulse with the mean value for previously received pulses to provide a currently measured increment. The latter is subjected to a probability process to provide a confidence value for the associated pulse and characteristic. The confidence values for the set of characteristics w.r.t. the associated pulses are combined to provide an overall confidence value for the associated pulse. The pulse characteristics include at least two of: the target angle; the pulse power level; the pulse width; and the pulse repetition interval. The target angle and associated probability process can take account of an estimated thermal noise component of the currently received pulse in determining an angle confidence value. ac |
