PURPOSE:To exactly perform the segmentation of a character and the recognition of a space even when a few amount of aberration occurs on the print position of the character, by describing specific character and mark on a specific position in a character describing area at the time of segmenting the character and the mark from an input form. CONSTITUTION:The specific mark is printed on the forefront of the character describing area of the input form 1, and it is read at a character observing art 3. Next, the slip format, the row interval, and the character interval of the form 1 are keyed in a host computer 12, and they are stored in a slip format memory part 11 and a row interval and character interval memory part 10. Data are read at the observing part 3 keeping the above state, and are stored as bit patterns in a picture memory 7. A character segmenting part 4 segments the specific mark, and segments the character one by one from the mark in order, and sends it to a recognition part 5, then, a recognition processing is applied on it. An output part 6 reads out a character code corresponding to a recognized result from a character code memory 9, and displays it on the display device of the computer 12. In such way, it is possible to exactly perform the segmentation of the character and the recognition of the space.
