An appts is used for the physico-chemical purificn. of a molten stream of Al, Mg, Zn, Pb, Sn or alloys based on one of these metals. The appts. includes a removable filter catridge, which is at least partly filled with grains of solid flux(I) with a melting point above the temp. of the molten stream. At least the outer part of grains (I) consists of one or more simple or complex fluorides of Na, Li, K, Ca, Ba, Mg, Al or Mn. The filter outlet is closed by a porous plate made by sintering one or more cpds. with a melting point above the temp. of the molten metal stream. At least the outer portion of these cpds. consists of one or more of the fluorides listed above.
