PURPOSE:To attain the automatic measurement of a wheel shape, by providing an image pickup device which image-picks up the contour of the outer peripheral part of a wheel, and a picture signal processing device which measures the shape of the wheel based on the picture signal of an image pickup signal. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam emitted from a laser beam source 1, after being expanded one-dimensionally by a cylindrical lens 2, is projected on the peripheral plane of the wheel W. A part on the wheel W where the laser beam is projected, is image-picked up with a TV camera 3 from an upper side obliquely. The picture signal outputted from the camera 3 is sent to a control device 4. The device 4 displays the image of the wheel on a TV monitor 5 based on an inputted picture element signal, and also, calculates the diameter of the wheel, a tread gradient, flange thickness, and flange height, and sends them to a printer 6. Thus, the automatic measurement of the shape of the wheel can be performed.
