PRODUCTION OF STAINLESS STEEL WIRE ROD HAVING HEXAGONALLY PATTERNED SURFACE

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled stainless steel wire rod having satisfactory drawability by treating a stainless steel wire rod having scale formed on the grain boundaries of the surface in a salt bath and by pickling the wire rod with a dil. aq. fluoronitric acid soln. CONSTITUTION:A wire rod of a stainless steel such as an austenitic or ferritic stainless steel is heat treated to form scale on the grain boundaries of the surface. The wire rod having the formed scale is treated with a molten alkali salt in a salt bath and pickled with a dil. aq. fluoronitric acid. Hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid are preferably used in (7-5)/(22-15) ratio in the fluoronitric acid soln. The concn. of the soln. is regulated to 1-11% so as to form a satisfactory hexagonally patterned surface. The pickling is usually carried out at <=70 deg.C within several min.
