PURPOSE:To make it possible to narrow a character selecting range and to easily input characters by forming four tones keys on a keyboard, and in case of inputting characters, using both alphabets and four tones codes. CONSTITUTION:In case of inputting an objective character, e.g 'MA' having a 1st tone out of four tones, the keyboard 23 outputs a code corresponding to alphabet M at the time of depressing an alphabet key M independently. When the alphabet key A and the 1st tone key 31 are simultaneously depressed, the code corresponding to the alphabet A and four tones key information. A microprocessor 21 stores data outputted from the keyboard 23 successively in a prescribed area of a memory 22 and searches 'KANJI' (Chinese character) data having the same code information from a conversion file 27. Then, the microprocessor 21 searches 'KANJI' data having the same code information as the four tones key information stored in the memory 22 and displays the corresponding 'KANJI' on a display part 25.
