PURPOSE:To enable color composition with high saturation and to obtain optimum color reproduction by providing a color composing means with a color wavelength selective reflecting means which transmits P-polarized incident green light and reflects S-polarized incident blue light and red light. CONSTITUTION:The light diverged from a light source 1 is collimated by a condenser lens 2 to irradiate a light valve 3 and enlarged and projected by a projection lens 4 to form an image on a screen 5. The image is formed by a transmission light valve corresponding to color light beams of the three primary colors of light and the color light is modulated. The influence of reflected light on the light valve surface is removed from the projection light obtained by using the transmission type light valve, and the contrast of the image is improved. Further, the light valve 3 employs an image display panel which uses the electrooptic effect of liquid crystal and the red light valve and blue light valve are put opposite reflecting surfaces corresponding to red and blue of selective reflection characteristics; and S-polarized light is made incident and the other green light is made incident as P-polarized light to compose the image, which has sharp color separation and superior saturation.
