PURPOSE:To obtain a cermet tip for cutting tools having excellent wear resistance and chipping resistance by compounding a hard dispersion phase of the specific formulation consisting of carbide, nitride, etc., of Ti, Ta, Nb, W, Mo, etc. and bond phase consisting of iron family metals at a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:This cermet tip for cutting tools consists of TiC+TiN or Ti(CN) having N/C+N=0.05-0.6 molar ratio, TaC and/or NbC contg. those added with 0.05-0.1wt% VC or VN, and WC and Mo2C having W/W+Mo=0.15-0.6 molar ratio. The respective metal components I, II, III thereof are within the quadrilateral area connecting the point 1 (90, 6, 4), point 2 (90, 3, 7), point 3 (60, 12, 28), and point 4 (60, 25, 16) of the ternary composition diagram. In addition, said cermet tip consists of 75-95% hard dispersion phase compounded with I/I+II+III=0.6-0.9, II/II+III=0.3-0.6 and 5-25% bond phase consisting of >=1 kinds of the iron family metals. The tip is thus improved in the chipping resistance without degrading the wear resistance which is the excellent characteristic intrinsic to the Ti(C,N)-based cermet.
