PURPOSE:To reduce the power consumption and to simplify the circuit by giving a gate current for triggering itself from a voltage between input and output electrodes of a main semiconductor element during the ON period and stopping the flowing of the gate current in receiving an OFF signal so as to turn off a semiconductor switch and self-holding the operation. CONSTITUTION:In turning off main thyristors 6a, 6b, when either an auxiliary thyristor 15a or 15b is once turned on, the thyristors 15a, 15b hold the on-state. As a result, resistors 9, 11 are short-circuited respectively by the auxiliary thyristors 15a, 15b and no gate current flows to the main thyristors 6a, 6b through diodes 13a, 13b, then the main thyristors 6a, 6b keep the OFF state. In turning on the thyristor switch, when the main thyristors 6a, 6b are turned on once, the thyristor switch can keep the ON state without an ON command. Thus, even when the ON period of the semiconductor switch durates long, the titled switch can be constituted by a gate signal generator with a small power.
