PURPOSE:To obtain a result equivalent to that obtained through a large-width filtering operation by repeating plural simple filtering operations related to the periphery of a single picture element of a picture to consequently obtain the result of a large-width filtering operation. CONSTITUTION:The continuous three pieces of picture data are sent to shift circuits 105-107 among those picture data received from a switch circuit 102 via delay elements 103 and 104 having a single piece of picture data respectively. The circuits 105-107 shift the picture data by an appropriate number of bits and perform multiplication/division with a number of the width power of '2'. Then these arithmetic results are added together by an adder 108. Then the circuits 105-107 shift the picture data by 2 bits and dividing equivalently the picture data by '4'. While the shift circuit 106 shifts the picture data by a single bit and divide the picture data by '2'. Under such conditions, the picture data obtained through 10 times of processing done by a processor 111 is equivalent to that obtained by performing equivalently a single large-width filtering operation.
