PURPOSE:To eliminate an orientation defect of a liquid crystal caused by pressure, by setting an angle made by a normal of a molecular layer vertical to a substrate, and an axis in the longitudinal direction of the substrate, to a prescribed range, in a liquid crystal element in which a chiral smectic liquid crystal is placed. CONSTITUTION:Between the upper side rectangular substrate 11 and the lower side rectangular substrate 12, a chiral smectic liquid crystal is placed. In such a case, a normal (uniaxial orientation processing axis) of a liquid crystal molecular layer vertical to the upper and the lower substrate 11, 12, an axis being parallel to the longitudinal direction of the upper side rectangular substrate 11, and its diagonal line and denoted as 13, 14 and 15, respectively. Also, an angle of the axis 14 and the diagonal line 15, and an angle made by the axis 14 and the normal 13 of the liquid crystal molecular layer are denoted as thetaa and thetaA, respectively. In this state, an orientation of the liquid crystal is formed so as to become a condition [0<=thetaA<=thetaa]. Therefore, by executing a uniaxial orientation processing, for instance, a rubbing processing, an oblique vapor-deposition processing, etc., the normal 13 is set to a range of a prescribed angle. Accordingly, the normal 13 is set to a prescribed angle, an orientation defect generated due to pressure to a large-sized display surface can be prevented.
