PURPOSE:To let an optical material to have a nonlinear regular structure by using a host-guest clathrate compd. comprising cyclodextrin as a host molecular and pi-electron conjugate aromatic compd. as a guest molecule. CONSTITUTION:A compd. obtd. by substituting at least a part of OH groups of cyclodextrin with an OH group or carbonyloxy group of a 10-22C linear hydrocarbon, is used as a hot molecule. An example for such host molecule is one substituting ca.30-60% of OH groups of alpha,beta,gamma-cyclodextrin with the above described specified group. Further, a pi-electron conjugate aromatic compd. having substituted groups having different direction of polarization and high polarizability is used as the guest molecule. Examples for the guest molecule are p-nitroaniline, 5-nitroindole, etc. A host-guest clathrate compd. is obtd. by including the host molecule with the guest molecule. Since the product is included, the inversed symmetricity of the clathrate compd. is eliminated, and the power for generating the second harmonic wave is increased. Thus, the clathrate compd. is useful as a material for a nonlinear optical material.
