The pain produced by external electrical cardiac stimulation can be reduced by using electrodes 10, 20 fitted with elements 12 coming into contact with the skin, which are non-metallic elements with a large surface area and high impedance. A pulse generator 22 is furthermore used with these electrodes, which generator supplies a constant current without transient points, during an extended pulse, with a duration greater than 5 ms. <IMAGE>
