PURPOSE:To confirm the traveling state of a tape even if it can not be seen with eyes by displaying a time code when the time code is recorded, and displaying a numerical value corresponding to the rotating state of reel mount when the time code is not recorded. CONSTITUTION:A subcode decoder 8 to decode a subcode, a time code detecting means 9 to detect whether the time code exists in the decoded subcode or not, a detecting means 11 to detect the rotation of the reel mount, a counting means 12 to generate the numerical value corresponding to the number of rotations, and a displaying means 14 controlled, through the use of the time code detecting means 9, so as to display a recorded time in the tape when the time code exists in the subcode, and to display the numerical value corresponding to the number of the rotations of the reel mount, i.e., the output signal of the counting means 12, when the time code does not exist in the subcode, are provided. Then, if the time code is recorded, it displays the time code, while if the time code is not recorded, it displays the numerical value corresponding to the rotating state of the reel mount. Thus, even when it can not be seen with eyes, the traveling state of the tape can be confirmed.
