The device comprises a stationary horizontal support 3 placed transversely above the movement track 4 of the objects 5. The pivoting element 8 consists of at least two vertical rods 14 which are spaced in the transverse direction, are hinged to a horizontal pivot pin 11, and are each solidly attached to a cam 16 at its upper end. The device furthermore comprises a detection means consisting of a pivoting detection element 22 solidly attached to a rotating shaft 20 parallel to the pin 11, and a detector 27 of the pivoting of the element 22 and of the shaft 20. The cams 16 cause the element 22 to pivot when an object 5 exhibiting an anomaly strikes at least one rod 14. The device is applicable in particular to the detection of the deformation of the strip heads at the output of shaping mills in a hot rolling line. <IMAGE>
