The tapoff comprises an emission optical fibre having an end face for coupling with the end faces of a direct transmission fibre 10 and of a tapoff fibre 12 of the same diameter as the emission fibre, these being truncated to the same predetermined depth Y equal at most to the radius, and being held adjacent to each other. Means 30, 32 enable the end face of the emission fibre to be moved between a position in which it coincides with the circular periphery of the direct transmission fibre and a position in which it covers more of the tapoff fibre, possibly as far as to coincide with the circular part of the periphery of this fibre. <IMAGE>
