PURPOSE:To make the adjustment of height highly accurate by using a reference tape having a correct track pitch and recording and reproducing a pilot signal while a lower edge of a rotary head is made coincident with the lower edge of the track of reference tape. CONSTITUTION:A pilot signal is fed to rotary heads H1, H2 from an oscillator 9 and a reproducing signal is compared by a comparator 16. A bias generating circuit 18 generates a bias signal to make an output difference signal of the circuit 16 zero, a relative height detection circuit 19 generates a bimiorph signal making a difference signal of the circuit 16 zero and gives the result to adder circuits 21, 22. A lower edge detection circuit 20 forms a bimorph voltage controlling the position of head to make the lower edge of the heads H1, H2 coincident with the lower edge of the track of the reference tape and give the voltage to the adder circuits 21, 22 to adjust the height. Thus, the adjustment of height with highly accurate is attained without being affected by a steady-state deviation.
