PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for heat- resistant high polymers and an intermediate for agricultural chemicals and drugs in a short time in high purity and in high yield, by dehydrating and condensing hydroxyphthalic anhydride with a diamine in the presence of an inert aprotic polar solvent. CONSTITUTION:Hydroxyphthalic anhydride is dehydrated and condensed with a diamine in the presence of an inert aprotic polar solvent (e.g. N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylformamide, quinoline, dimethyl sulfoxide, sulfolane, etc.) and further a dehydrating traction agent (preferably aromatic hydrocarbon having >=100 deg.C boiling point) to give a bis(hydroxyphthalimide) [e.g. 4,4'-bis(4- hydroxyphthalimidyl)diphenylmethane, etc.].
