PURPOSE:To obtain the titled high-purity compound with hardly any coloring, by reacting acrylic acid with a high-boiling alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst using a specific entrainer as a dehydrating agent, carrying out azeotropic dehydrating distillation of water formed by the reaction and separating the overhead vapor condensate. CONSTITUTION:Acrylic acid or methacrylic acid is reacted with a high-boiling alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst and polymerization inhibitor using an entrainer having a lower boiling point than that of the (meth)acrylic acid and alcohol, e.g. n-heptane, etc., at 70-150 deg.C under ordinary pressure and water formed by the reaction is removed by azeotropic dehydrating distillation to separate overhead vapor condensate. The entrainer is vaporized and removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The reaction solution is neutralized and washed with water to remove the catalyst and unreacted raw materials and afford the aimed compound. This method has advantages as follows. The separated entrainer can be reused and the reaction is completed in the presence of a small amount of the catalyst in a short time. A high-quality material may not be used as equipment material. The resultant product is used as a modifying agent for synthetic resins, coating materials, inks, etc.
