To achieve effective protection from the sun with relatively low expenditure on control equipment and installation, a single location is used for sensing the light intensity by means of a light-sensor device (1) and for calling up predeterminable variables, such as the position of the sun according to the time of year and time of day, coordinates of sections of a surface area to be protected against solar radiation and coordinates of shadow-casting objects, as data from memories (17, 18 and 19) and combining them in a computing device (8) to form adjusting commands for light-shielding elements assigned to the individual sections of the surface area. <IMAGE>
