A known filter apparatus has a gas filter arranged in the gas stream, downstream of which, in relation to the direction of flow of the gas stream, there is arranged a slot-shaped blower nozzle pointing in the opposite direction and upstream of which gas filter there is arranged a mouthpiece facing the gas filter and arranged opposite the blower nozzle. Mouthpiece and blower nozzle are collectively transversely movable relative to the gas filter. Drive means are provided to generate the relative motion. In order, in such a filter apparatus, to increase the filter surface area in relation to the volume and in this case to facilitate the self-cleaning of the filter, the gas filter is provided with at least one plate element (21) having a pleat (23)-forming fine dust filter medium. The blower nozzle (13) extends roughly in parallel to the pleats of the filter medium over their length. The direction of the relative motion runs transversely to the pleats. The mouthpiece (16) is connected to a vacuum source. The filter apparatus is suitable for filtering a gas stream. <IMAGE>
