The invention relates to a thermal printer in which a thermal ink ribbon is used. The ink-ribbon supply roll (15) and the winding roll (17) are located in the printer frame so as to be accessible from the top. Between the rolls (15, 17), the impression cylinder (5) is mounted in a rocker (6) which can be pivoted out about the axle of the winding roll (17) for exchanging the ink ribbon and for cleaning the thermal element line (24). In the operating state, the rocker (6) is locked by latches (30). A cam lever (31) is provided for unlocking, which, by means of intermediate levers (34) and a rod (36) causes the thermal print head (21) or the thermal element line (24), mounted pivotably on a longitudinal axle, firstly to be raised from the impression cylinder (5) before the latches (30) are moved out of engagement with bolts (3a) of the rocker by means of the intermediate levers (34). <IMAGE>
