Prodn. comprises (a) blending filler (II) with (I) in wt. ratio (II):(I)= 15-1:1; (b) blending in a plasticising agent (III) with wt. ratio (III):(I)= 0.1-3:1 to open up the elastomer; and (c) steps (a) and (b) are completed before subjecting the plasticised blend to high intensity mixing and before adding the remainder of desired gum base components in subsequent mixing steps. The power requirement for the high intensity mixing is less than 0.32 amps/lb of throughput at 100 rpm. Ratio (II):(I)= 8-2:1 esp. ca 3:1. Suitable (II) are MgCO3, Al2O3, talc etc. pref. CaCO3. (I) (pref. in particulate form) is esp. butadiene-styrene copolymer, polyisobutylene, isobutylene-isoprene copolymer, or mixts. Ratio (III):(I)= 0.25-2:1 esp. 0.5-1:1. Pref. (III) includes n-Bu stearate; oleic acid; mono-, di-, or tri-glyceryl esters of oleic, caprylic, butyric, capric, caproic, or lauric acid; mineral oil; liq. petroleum hydrocarbons; squalane, squalene; castor oil (and other ricinoleate derivs.); diethylene or propylene glycols and derivs.; tri-Bu acetyl citrate; tri-Bu citrate, etc. |
