INTEGRAL LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR COMPOSITE AIRCRAFT SKINS

A system for a structure with an inserted fastener having a head on an outer surface comprises a Ni-plated graphite fibre fabric ply along the outer surface and over the head, with a dielectric layer between the ply and head. There is pref. a glass fibre insert around the fastener shaft to further decrease the likelihood of sparking. The dielectric is e.g. transparent polyester or polyimide and the fastener is e.g. of Ti. Less than 100% of the fibre tows in both warp and fill directions of the ply may be plated, depending on the degree of protection required. The arrangement provides improved compatibility of the system to prevent maintenance problems.
