PURPOSE:To eliminate a defect in orientation even if a panel flexes with an external force by setting the angle thetaa between the diagonals of a rectangular substrate and the angle thetaA of the normal of the vertical molecular layer of liquid crystal so that 0<=thetaA<thetaa. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 32a and 32b and orientation control films 34a and 34b are provided on upper and lower rectangular substrates 31a and 31b, and the ferroelectric liquid crystal 33 of nonspiral structure is charged between them. The angle theta between the breadthwise axes 14 of the rectangular substrates and a diagonal 15 and the angle thetaA between the normal 13 of the vertical molecular layer of the liquid crystal and the axes 14 are so set that 0<=thetaA<thetaa, thereby setting a unidirectional orientation axis obtained by rubbing processing parallel to the normal 13. Consequently, even when a large-sized panel flexes by being applied with an external force, a defect in orientation is prevented from being caused. |
