PURPOSE:To shorten time required for retrieving a dictionary by sequentially outputting the differences of input feature amounts from a distance table, inputting them to a cumulative adder circuit, and cumulating and adding them. CONSTITUTION:In the cumulative adder circuit 7, an adder 8 adds difference data inputted from a distance table memory 6 and data on cumulated and added values (data held in a register 9), and a register 10 holds the results. Everytime a distance regarding one feature amount is calculated, a control circuit 13 decrements a counter 12. Then the control circuit 13 stops the distance calculating action, and reports the fact to a microprocessor through a control line 15. The side of the microprocessor sets data (distance data) in the register 10 to a register 11 through a control line 17, fetches the distance data, and compares it with the distance of a candidate character, which has been obtained. If necessary, the candidate character is updated.
